TRAINEES REACHED

We aim to empower the next generation of skilled researchers through training. We offer national and international PhD programs and a wide range of advanced courses. We facilitate students’ mobility in top international institutions. Our focus is on advancing career growth through mentoring and skill-building.

Advanced Courses

CBMA fosters a culture of internationalization and excellence, providing advanced training in strategic scientific areas, under an immersive atmosphere during intense short-term periods (1-2 weeks). Guest lecturers include recognized foreign researchers.

You can explore the full selection of advanced courses here. The course portfolio changes every year. Check out this year’s offer in our advertisement poster (or download it as a pdf file).

Specialised Training Courses

Flexible training opportunities are available for prospective students or early-stage researchers that wish to boost or certify their research competencies. These short-term courses follow a customizable modular structure, allowing a personalized capacitation portfolio for the trainees.

Specialisation Course in Molecular Genetics of Yeasts
Specialisation Course in Safety and Good Practices in Biosciences Laboratories
Specialisation Course on Competencies in Scientific Research

Mentoring

We endorse initiatives that assist students and early career researchers in advancing their career development and securing funding opportunities. Besides maintaining open lines of communication between young researchers and senior members (including the board of directors), we promote guidelines for best practices in applications, internal discussion forums (e.g., testimonies sharing past successful experiences), and organizing internal mock-review of grant or job applications.

Lifelong Learning

In close collaboration with CBMA stakeholders, including the IB-S Strategic Business Council (composed of key industrial and business partners), we provide training programs (e.g., on-site courses) for industry, services or business professionals aimed at updating competences and skills in areas such as biostatistics, ecological footprint, climate services, food safety, agro-pest control, or biotechnological advances. For requests of customized training programs or for more information, please contact cbma_sec@bio.uminho.pt.

Other Initiatives

Complementary training initiatives are designed to cover a broad spectrum of key competencies, including ethics and research integrity, public science and policies, data analysis and management, grant writing, project management, communication skills and stage performance, as well as career planning. We additionally foster the organization of various symposia and seminars with invited scientists and support in-house initiatives, such as the annual symposium of PhD students (PhD|Bio). CBMA also endorses the portfolio of training opportunities for PhD students (transferable skills) and supervisors (good practices in doctoral supervision) provided by the Doctoral College of the University of Minho.

SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWERS

We are committed with bridging science and society, aligning scientific excellence with social awareness and bringing the questions and concerns of society to our research, by:

Sharing our scientific achievements to boost scientific literacy and inspire young people to pursue higher education in Biological Sciences.

Fostering the implementation of novel solutions and approaches co-designed and co-implemented with citizens to ensure their societal adoption

Recognizing the significance of transferring knowledge and technology to industry and society, driving innovation and value creation.

Public Engagement

Engaging with the public is at the heart of our mission, and we are committed to promoting the dialogue between scientists and the broader community. By sharing our knowledge and enthusiasm, we can encourage scientific literacy in society and inspire young people to pursue higher education in Biological Sciences. Through visiting exchanges, thematic workshops, Open Days, projects with schools, and events such as the European Researchers’ Night, we aim to inspire curiosity and foster a better comprehension of our research. Browse through our various activities here.

Open Science

Our commitment to open science ensures that publicly-funded research is accessible to all. By promoting transparency and collaboration, we aim to accelerate scientific discovery and innovation. We adopt initiatives to provide open access to our publications, data, and methodologies, using institutional repositories for data (DataRepositóriUM), communications, papers and theses (RepositóriUM), in addition to publishing most of our findings in Open Access publishers.

Science4Policy

Scientific evidence and close cooperation between science and policy are needed to address today’s major policy challenges, with co-creation being central to Science for Policy 2.0. At CBMA, we promote Science for Policy through various initiatives (such as “Science and Public Policy: How to Build Bridges?”), and many of our works inform policymakers and regulators on best practices or alert to potential environmental risks. We work closely with authorities and regional stakeholders to ensure that scientific discoveries influence policy decisions and bridge the knowledge gap between science and policy.

Media

Our communication strategy uses both traditional and social media to disseminate research, events, and achievements. We maintain regular presence in traditional media through press releases and media coverage, providing timely information about our latest activities and milestones. Our social media platforms (e.g., Instagram, X and LinkedIn) offer real-time updates and interactive engagement. By integrating traditional and social media, we enhance the visibility and accessibility of our research, ensuring that our scientific contributions are widely disseminated and appreciated by diverse audiences.

Knowledge Transfer

The European knowledge valorisation policy calls for diverse societal engagement and the involvement of various actors to ensure that innovation benefits society as a whole. Collaboration is key to innovation. Through our CoLABs (Water-CoRe, Colab4Food, and Vines&Wines) and the IB-S Business Council, we collaborate closely with industry, municipalities and other academic partners, to transfer and value knowledge and technology. Our goal is to translate research into tangible societal benefits. A good example are our filed patents and the launch of a Spin-off (EONGENETICS) for services and innovation in genetics.

We contribute to advance scientific knowledge on bio-sustainability by using a combined approach of hypothesis-driven research and high-throughput technologies. To that end, CBMA is organised in four Research Groups (RGs) reflecting complementary scientific expertise and approaches.

COMPUTING LIFE

Bioinformatics from Molecules to Ecosystems

By tackling the complexity of biological systems across distinct levels of organization, from molecules to the biosphere, our research converges on Integrative Biology. Our research groups are strongly aligned with the EU strategy and its various plans and actions, as well as the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The interdisciplinar collaboration among RGs and our deep knowledge on biodiversity serves as a foundation for the discovery of novel molecular targets and cellular pathways, as well the development of environmentally-friendly processes and bioproducts. The use of cross-disciplinary approaches allows us to assess, model, and forecast biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics in response to environmental change in aquatic and agro-ecosystems.
