CBMA took part in the kick-off meeting of the StrengthS4WineChaiN project

CBMA participated in the kick-off meeting of the project StrengthS4WineChaiN – Scientific and technological synergies for the development of the vine and wine value chain in Northern Portugal, a strategic initiative focused on innovation and sustainability in the wine sector.

The project is coordinated by José Moutinho Pereira, from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro – UTAD (CITAB – Centre for the Research and Technology of Agro-Environmental and Biological Sciences), and brings together a multidisciplinary consortium including the  University of Minho – UM (CBMA, CEB – Center of Biological Engineering and CMAT – Math Center)  and the University of Porto – UP (FFUP – Faculty of Pharmacy and FCUP – Faculty of Sciences), reinforcing strong interinstitutional collaboration.

CBMA is represented by the researchers Hernâni Gerós (Coordinator at UM), Alberto Dias, Ana Cunha, Maria João Sousa, Sofia Costa and Teresa Lino Neto.

StrengthS4WineChaiN aims to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for the wine value chain in Northern Portugal, addressing key challenges such as climate change, water scarcity and the need for resource efficiency. The project also promotes the development of low-alcohol wines and the valorisation of by-products, following a circular economy approach.

Structured around three main research lines — sustainable technologies, climate-resilient viticulture and innovative wine products — the project targets an advanced Technology Readiness Level (TRL7), enabling the validation of solutions in real operational environments.

The kick-off meeting included the 1st project seminar, fostering dialogue between academia, industry and institutional stakeholders, and reinforcing the strategic relevance of this collaborative initiative for the future of viticulture in Northern Portugal.
