CBMA Researchers Launch Atlantic Fish Monitoring Network

The CBMA is spearheading the development of an Atlantic fish monitoring network using DNA barcoding. This initiative has been recognised by the United Nations’ “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development” for its significant impact on ocean conservation efforts.

Genetic data, which provides a unique “fingerprint” for each species, allows for faster and more precise identification during the larval stage, overcoming the limitations of traditional morphological methods. According to project coordinator Filipe Costa, “Recent advancements in genetic data collection and bioinformatics tools position DNA barcoding as an exceptional approach for environmental monitoring.”

Marine biologist Luís Machado adds: “By simply collecting seawater, we can identify species through the DNA they release, known as environmental DNA.”

This project not only supports sustainable fisheries management but also plays a crucial role in training local technicians in Brazil, Cape Verde, and Guinea-Bissau, thereby fostering long-term environmental stewardship across the Atlantic region.
