Ana Preto Receive Basinnov Innovation Award

The TaMuK: Targeting Mutated KRAS project, led by Ana Preto (CBMA) and Andreia Valente (Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon), has been awarded the Basinnov Innovation Award 2024.

An innovative compound developed in Portugal has become the first to block the three main mutations of the KRAS gene, frequently linked to colorectal and pancreatic cancers. Results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the PMC79 compound in laboratory cells and animal models, with the potential to revolutionise the treatment of these and other cancers, including lung, ovarian, and uterine cancers.

The project, titled “TaMuK: Targeting Mutated KRAS”, is patented and began approximately ten years ago, led by the team of Ana Preto from the CBMA, and Andreia Valente from the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (FCUL). The team also includes Helena Garcia and Paulo Costa (FCUL) as well as Cristina Fillat from the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (Barcelona).

The award was presented during a satellite event of Web Summit in Lisbon, organised by Basinnov Life Sciences, the Gulbenkian Institute for Molecular Medicine (GIMM), and EIT Health InnoStars.
