Associate Professor w/ Habilitation at the Department of Biology, University of Minho. Course Director of the PhD Program in Molecular and Environmental Biology. PhD in Biomedical Sciences – Microbiology at ICBAS, University of Porto. Graduation in Biochemistry at University of Porto.

Research

Her main areas of interest have been the cellular and molecular responses of yeast to different environmental stresses or changes, including metabolic adaptation with emphasis on transport systems, mechanisms underlying resistance or induction of cell death. She has been especially involved in the study of yeast apoptotic and necrotic pathways and their regulation, using acetic acid and ammonium as death stimuli. In addition, she uses yeast as a model system for the study of heterologously expressed mammalian proteins and for the identification of cellular targets of natural compounds and novel synthetic molecules. . She has been particularly interested in the development of studies addressing the exploitation of non-conventional yeast in biotechnology, using approaches at the biochemical and physiological levels but also at the genomic, transcriptomic and metabolomics levels.
